Minisink Valley Schools will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12, in observance of Veterans Day (Sunday, Nov. 11).

Originally called Armistice Day, this federal holiday commemorated the signing of the agreement that ended World War I at 11 a.m., on Nov. 11, 1918. In 1954, the observance was renamed as Veterans Day, and it became a time to honor all who serve or have served in the armed forces of the United States.

Minisink Valley Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets will honor veterans in a variety of ways over the course of three days. Today, Thursday, Nov. 8, they traveled to the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen to place American flags on headstones. Tonight, they will present the colors at the National Honor Society's Annual Veterans Dinner. On Friday, they will visit veterans at the Bon Secours Senior Center in Port Jervis, and on Saturday they will take part in the Otisville Veterans Day Parade.

Ways to honor our veterans...

  • Attend a Veterans Day parade or event in your area. The Town of Mount Hope will host its Annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. The parade will start at the Otisville Fire House, at the end of Veterans Park.
  • Ask a veteran about their service and really listen.
  • Visit a VA hospital.
  • Display the flag to salute our veterans.
  • Learn more about the men and women currently on duty.
